Graduate Student Association
Records, 1966-1997
AC 382
The Graduate Student Association was established in September 1966, with the stated purpose to promote the welfare and interests of the graduate students of the University of Nevada. The primary goals are to improve the quality of graduate education and offer academic support to graduate students. Among the activities and services offered by GSA are socials, a travel assistance program, and assistance with grievances, awards and scholarships. GSA also is concerned with non-academic issues including tuition, funding for graduate assistants, child-care, health care, and parking. The association is composed of a Council of Representatives, selected by each academic college and school, and a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.
The records in this collection include the minutes of the first meeting in 1966, and the initial development of the association through 1969. The majority of the records document the 1980s and 1990s, and include the president's notebooks, which contain information on the constitution, meetings, committees, and comments; agendas and minutes of meetings; committee reports; surveys; legislation affecting graduate students; and membership in the National Group of Graduate and Professional Students (NGGPS) a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of graduate student life in the United States. Also included is information on an etching by western artist Roy Purcell, commissioned by the association for the University's centennial in Reno, 1985.
