Max C. Fleischmann College of Agriculture
Division of Renewable Natural Resources
Records, 1935-1993
AC 366

The records in this collection were primarily created by John L. Artz, Division of Renewable Natural Resources, College of Agriculture, 1966-1985. During his UNR tenure he served as Professor, Extension Range Management Specialist and from 1982-1984, as Associate Director of the Cooperative Extension Service. Much of the material in this collection relates to public land livestock grazing issues of the 1970s and early 80s. During this period, there was a high level of interest in these issues because of court action brought by the Natural Resources Defense Council against the Bureau of Land Management requiring local Environmental Impact Statement on all their livestock grazing activities, and the MX Missile System, in Nevada. Artz was involved in these issues as a consultant, educator, and mediator. Working with Dean Dale W. Bohmont, he helped organize and in 1978 chaired the Western Universities Public Rangeland Coordinating Committee, a coalition of range specialist from all the western land grant colleges that offered science-based information and recommendations towards the resolution of issues. Because of his focus on rangelands, the records also document his involvement as a member of the range inventory standardization committee and the wild horse and burro research committee. Following UNR retirement, Artz served five years as the first National Range Management Program Leader for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Extension Service, Washington, D.C. and three years as Vice-President and President of the Society for Range Management, Denver, Colorado. [See Archives Collection 394].

Records were also collected reflecting other agencies interests and information; included among these is the Sierra Club, and the Nevada Cattleman's Association.

In addition, there are Renewable Natural Resources department records dealing with plans of work, annual reports, and memorandums; environmental education programs; various project reports, surveys, studies, and policies; miscellaneous articles, speeches, news releases; and public statements concerning grazing fees.

There is also a series of records that were designated "historical". The records were written or collected by Joseph H. Robertson, Emeritus Professor of Range Management, and include correspondence and early publications concerning range plantings and grazing, 1935-1985.

The most recent records in this collection are two public statements concerning grazing fees, 1991 and 1993. An attempt was made to keep the records in original order, and retain folder titles.
