Ivan Sack
Ivan Sack was born on October 4, 1908 in Alamosa, Colorado. He was educated in Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University in 1933 with a degree in forestry. Before coming to Nevada, Ivan Sack worked with the U.S. Forest Service as a professional forester in the states of California, Colorado, and Utah, and also served in World War II as an officer in the U.S. Navy. In 1951, the Forest Service transferred Mr. Sack to Nevada as forest supervisor for the Toiyabe National Forest, a position he held for fifteen years. During this time, he also joined the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno, as a part time lecturer, a position which continued past his retirement from the Forest Service in 1965. Other post retirement activities included general consulting work, Natural Resources consultant for the State of Nevada, Reno Park Superintendent, 1967 to 1971, appointed member-at-large to the Nevada Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, 1968 to 1970, and service on numerous boards and commissions. In 1977, he completed an oral history for the University of Nevada, which may be consulted for further biographical information.
Scope and Content
The papers of Ivan Sack are contained in one archival box, plus an envelope of oversize material. They include material generated and collected by Mr. Sack and they pertain almost exclusively to his work with the U.S. Forest Service. The few exceptions relate to his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Included are official Forest Service daily diaries, 1951-1965; published and unpublished U.S. Forest Service material; articles and a manuscript written by Ivan Sack; autobiographical material; collected printed works including books, reports, brochures and maps, and a small collection of photographs. The material covers the time period 1934 to 1979.

Series 1 NC898/1 Personal and Collected Papers
This series contains personal and collected papers of Ivan Sack from 1934 to 1979. Included is autobiographical information; correspondence, 1934-1965; articles written by Mr. Sack, and a typed manuscript copy of his "History of the Toiyabe National Forest"; 1824-1965; collected articles, reports and student papers; U.S. Forest Service and Lake Tahoe material. 8 folders.
Series 2 NC898/2 Official Diaries
Included in this series are eight U.S.D.A. Forest Service official diaries, 1951-1965. As supervisor of the Toiyabe National Forest, Mr. Sack recorded his daily activities in these diaries. The diaries are loose in the box.
Series 3 NC898/3 Printed material
This series contains a variety of printed material collected by Ivan Sack. Included are two copies of Nevada Conservation Adventure, (1954 and 1959), a textbook for use in Nevada public schools, co-authored by Mr. Sack; U.S. Forest service printed material; Lake Tahoe printed material; reports; brochures; newspaper clips. Three maps are also included, two of the Toiyabe National Forest, and a U.S.G.S. topographic quadrangle map of Bridgeport, California. An oversize envelope contains additional printed material including a corrected copy, by Mr. Sack, of Recreation in Nevada, Volumes I and II. Printed material is contained in 6 folders. Bound volumes are loose in the box. All but one map placed in the map case drawer M16-Tahoe. Other map in M-15, "Nevada- 1920", drawer.

Included are photographs of Ivan Sack, Forest Service activities, and scenes of Guadalcanal during World War II. 1 folder. Transferred to photo archives.
