ALFRED DOTEN, 1829-1903

Alfred (Alf) Doten was born on July 21, 1829 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In March of 1849, at nineteen years of age, Alf sailed on the converted whaling bark Yeoman for the gold fields of California. Doten began a journal of his adventures on the first day at sea, March 18, and continued to keep a diary throughout the rest of his life.

In California Doten soon abandoned gold mining for odd jobs, farming, and ranching. Doten left California in 1863 for the Nevada silver boom of the Comstock Lode at Virginia City. His career in journalism was born there as he became a newspaper correspondent for several California and Nevada papers and then owner of the Gold Hill News. At his peak, he was one of the most influential newspaper men in the Comstock.

Doten married a widow, Mrs. Mary E. C. Stoddard in 1873; together they had two sons and two daughters, and raised Mary's daughter from her first marriage.

Unwise mining investments brought about Doten's downfall in the last two years of the 1870s and Doten lost his newspaper along with all other assets. The family moved to Austin where Doten edited the Reese River Reveille for a time but Mary's teaching job provided the real income for the family as Alf's drinking increasingly incapacitated him. Eventually they separated, Mary moving to Reno (where an elementary school at West 5th and Washington Streets was named for her), and Alf to Carson City as engrosser of bills for the state legislature and contributor to the Territorial Enterprise. But drinking once again lost him his jobs and he was forced to move to Reno where, as Walter Van Tilburg Clark states, he became "a kind of prisoner of his family, pledged to give up drinking" (The Journals of Alfred Doten, v. 3, pg. 1577).

Unable to keep his pledge, Doten made a final move back to Carson City for a legislative reporting assignment. There he received a monthly stipend from Mary but was forbidden to move back home. He died November 12, 1903, having made his last diary entry the day before.

Mary Doten taught in Reno and was a well known educator until her death in 1914 at age 69. Son Alfred Jr. was part owner in a Reno warehouse; he died in 1926. Son Samuel B. was director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and professor at the University of Nevada; he died in 1955. Daughter Bessie died in 1905 at age 31 and daughter Goodwill committed suicide in 1911 at age 30 after the death of her fiance.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The papers of Alfred Doten were purchased in 1961 by the University of Nevada through funds donated by the Max C. Fleischmann Foundation and the Nevada State Legislature. There are eighteen boxes of manuscript materials dating from 1849-1903 and about 297 photographs. The collection is open to all with no restrictions.

The most important series in the collection consists of seventy-nine volumes of diaries kept by Doten from March 18, 1849, his first day at sea on the voyage to California, until November 11, 1903, the day before he died. Doten wrote daily entries with few omissions, noting events, people and places of interest. He frequently pasted in newspaper clippings or inserted memoranda, playbills, stock certificates, letters, etc. into the diaries, making them an incomparable source of information on the California gold rush, farming and ranching in California, mining and journalism in Nevada, and the early history of both the gold and silver states of California and Nevada.

These diaries, often nearly illegible because of their faded pencil entries, are supplemented by typed transcripts prepared by Mary Ann Jaffe under the supervision of Walter Van Tilburg Clark. Clark edited the diaries which were published in 1973 in three volumes by the University of Nevada Press under the title, The Journals of Alfred Doten.

Also part of the collection are notes written by Clark as he edited the diaries for publication. These notes appear in several locations in Series 2 on reproductions of Doten's writings, as notebooks, and as correspondence. There are also transcriptions of the diaries prepared by Aubrey Drury and notes collected by him toward a book on Doten which was not completed before Drury's death.

The collection contains many other writings by Doten in the forms of manuscript stories, poems, historical sketches, and correspondence. These date from 1835-1902 and are accompanied by transcriptions (probably by Jaffe).

Two boxes of the Doten papers contain newspaper clippings, many of them articles written by Doten, beginning with Doten's "California Letters" published in the Plymouth (Mass.) Rock in 1849. There are articles by Dan De Quille; clippings about James G. Fair and family and the Pacific Coast Pioneers; and miscellaneous clippings collected by Aubrey Drury. The titles of these articles, author's name, their source, and date published are listed in this guide.

Doten invested heavily in Nevada silver mines and went bankrupt in the late 1870s when the Nevada mining industry suffered a severe depression. Series 8 contains stock certificates for many of the companies in which Doten had an interest. Other materials in this series are statements, bills, letters, and receipts dating from 1863-1881, all related to Doten's mining businesses.

As mentioned previously, there are some 297 photographs in the collection which have been transferred to the photo archives sections of the Special Collections Department. These images are all original cartes de visite and stereopticon slides (also known as stereo cards) and are of mining scenes in Nevada and California (there is a particularly nice series showing hydraulic mining in California), views of Virginia City and Gold Hill, and portraits of family, friends and acquaintances. All but a small number were identified by Doten and all have been cataloged by the Special Collections Department staff. A list of images, their identification, and their photo call numbers is included in this guide.

Series 2. Diary Transcriptions and Materials Used in Preparation of the Published Diaries. ca 1961-1972.

The Doten Diaries contain a unmatched wealth of information about the history of northern California and more importantly, Nevada, from 1849-1903. Those who first viewed the collection quickly realized the potential for a publication. Before the collection was sold to the University of Nevada, Aubrey Drury began a project in the 1950s to publish a book on Doten, using typescripts of the diaries and his research notes. Unfortunately, Drury died before the book was completed. After the diaries were acquired by Nevada, the fledgling University of Nevada Press initially visualized a one volume "summation"of the diaries. Although several historians and writers were considered as editors, Walter Van Tilburg Clark was selected.

Clark faced a number of major challenges in editing the diaries: the difficulty in deciphering the faint penciled pages, the code which Doten used for some entries, the often-times brief references to intriguing events or people of his acquaintance, and the immense wealth of material to condense or summarize. Clark decided to enlarge the scope of the project to a multi-volume condensed, annotated version of the original journals. Over a period of ten years Clark had the diaries and Doten's other writings typed and deciphered (in the case of the coded entries), and engaged in extensive correspondence and research. The following series includes those typescripts, Clark's notes and correspondence, clippings, Clark's prospectus for the original one volume edition, copies of Doten's correspondence, and transcriptions of the Doten diaries by Aubrey Drury and notes collected by him.

Series 3. Manuscripts by Doten. ca 1835; 1849-1902.

This series contains manuscripts of short stories, articles, poems, sheet music, an obituary, historical sketches, articles of agreement (for a mining company), and reporter's notes written by Doten, and transcriptions of those manuscripts, probably by Mary Ann Jaffe. Most of these are undated. The earliest items are a translation of the Alviso or Milpitas Grant, from Monterey, California, 1835; and articles of agreement between Bradford Barnes and the Pilgrim Mining Company at Plymouth, Massachusetts, March 13, 1849. Other writings on miscellaneous subjects vary from a dedication "To Mine Lizzie" to reporter's notes on the Corbett-Fitzsimmons fight.

This small series contains issues of two Nevada newspapers. The examples of the Como Sentinel were the last issues of that paper printed before the paper was moved and the name changed to the Lyon County Sentinel. The issues of the Lyon County Sentinel found here are the first editions of the former Como Sentinel printed in its new location under its new title.

Series 5. Newspaper Clippings. 1849-1903; 1933-1958.

The newspaper clippings series contains clippings collected by Doten as well as by Aubrey Drury in his research for the proposed book about Doten. The material collected by Doten includes his own published material, beginning with his California letters to the Plymouth Rock, Oct. 6, 1849; and articles he found interesting which he did not author. This material includes articles by Dan De Quille, clippings on James G. Fair and family, and items about the Pacific Coast Pioneers. Many of these articles are accompanied by transcriptions (probably made during Clark's editorship of the Doten diaries). Drury's materials covered the subjects of Nevada, silver, Eilley Orrum and Sandy Bowers, the Comstock Lode, Virginia City, and Emma Nevada.

The newspaper clippings are arranged in two sections: the Doten materials, NC08/5/1-30, and the Drury materials, NC03/5/31/1-8. The Doten materials are arranged overall by the name of the newspaper in which articles were published and chronologically within each newspaper title, with the De Quille and other miscellaneous clippings grouped separately. The Drury clippings are grouped by subject.

Series 6. Photographs. 1863-1874. 297 images, plus one roll of microfilm.

The photographs in the Doten collection consist of original prints, primarily cartes-de-visite, with some stereopticon slides (also known as stereo cards). About two-thirds of the images are portraits of individuals, all of which are identified by Doten and most of which are dated, also by Doten. These identifications carry a location of the subject, most commonly noted as Virginia [City], Nevada, with a few from California. [Note: some photos taken elsewhere were marked "Virginia, Nevada' by Doten; therefore since Doten's locations indicate the subjects presence in Nevada, rather than where the photo was taken, Doten's dates may refer to when the subject was in Nevada, rather than when the photograph was taken.] Other photos depict mining scenes in the Mother Lode region of California and the Comstock Lode of Nevada. Especially important are the rare scenes of hydraulic mining in California. There are many views of the streets and mines of Virginia City, Silver City, Dayton, and Gold Hill, Nevada in both cartes-de-visite and stereo card formats and several images of the Central Pacific Railroad in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Also present is a roll of microfilm (negative) of these photos; the film was taken by Aubrey Drury while the collection was held by John Howell Books.

All of the photographs have been transferred to the photo archives of the Special Collections Department and xerox copies made and placed in binders in the reading room.

Series 7. Nevada Playbills. 1864. 9 items.

This series of playbills for performances in Nevada all date from a few months of 1864 and reflect Doten's avid interest in every kind of melodeon, minstrel, or dramatic show. Most of the advertised performances were amateur productions. Additional playbills are also in Series One, pasted into the pages of several diaries. Series 8. Stock Certificates and Related Material. 1863-1881.

The boom years of the Comstock Lode coincided with the peak years of Doten's personal prosperity. During this period, Doten initially bought stocks in mining companies and became an officer in several small but promising mining enterprises in Como, Nevada. When Como collapsed he moved on to Virginia City where he invested heavily in mining companies, prospering enough to purchase the Gold Hill News. He became the mining and political confidant of such mining figures as J.B. Winters, J.P. Jones, William Sharon, Adolph Sutro, and John Mackay. Unfortunately he continued to buy stock even as the Comstock declined, and by 1881 Doten lost his newspaper and home to his creditors William Sharon, John Mackay, and the Nevada Bank.

Materials in this series include mining company stock certificates, receipts, statements of account, letters, and deposit slips. The stocks are for companies in a number of mining districts in Nevada, a few in California, and one in Arizona. The certificates are arranged alphabetically by the name of the company. Unless noted otherwise, all materials listed below are stock certificates. The number following the company name is the stock certificate number. This series contains a variety of materials which did not fit neatly into the previous series. The variety is wide, from Doten's proof of citizenship for seaman's papers (1849) to political tickets, maps, tax receipts, wedding invitations, minutes of the Committee for Making Laws and Regulations for Shaw's Diggings, clippings, and letters. Arranged in no specific order.
