A GUIDE TO THE PAPERS OF

Ann And William Scott

Collection no. 97-27

Scope And Content Note

This is the third major accession of papers of Ann and William Scott. All three collections are closely related but space considerations dictated that they be arranged and cataloged as separate units.

This accession was donated by Ann Scott in October, 1997 and consists of 2.5 cubic feet of materials dating from 1917-1995. There are no restrictions on their use.

The bulk of this collection consists of Ann Scott's working papers: research notes, manuscripts of several children's books, correspondence with her publishers, and materials of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, to which Ann belonged. Other materials in the collection include some of Ann's personal correspondence; college records and personal correspondent from William Scott while an undergraduate; and World War I correspondence from Ann's father, Henry L. Herbert to his mother and sister.

Arrangement of this accession, including numbering of groups, subgroups, and series, follows that of the two earlier Scott collections: 95-92 and 97-15. Therefore, there are major gaps in the numbering scheme, since few of the original groups and series are present in this collection.

For a full biographical statement of the Scotts and scope and content note, see the manuscript collection guides for 95-92, 99-26, and 97-15.

97-27/II/2            Subgroup 2, William Scott Personal Papers. 1934-1938; 1959-1960. .50 cu. ft.

This small group of personal papers of William Scott dates from his college years at Haverford College, Swarthmore College, and Yale. One of the most interesting files contains letters written by Bill to his parents during his freshman year at Haverford. These letters reveal a budding scholar, a tight financial situation, and an increasing desire to begin his sophomore year at Swarthmore College. Another folder in this series contains a yearbook from Bill's junior year at college, where the caption under his photograph noted, "Though he has a subtly humorous appreciation of life and jokes, the scientific and orderly predominantly and seriously direct Bill's life." Also included are a scrapbook of Bill's trip to Europe following college graduation, and a research notebook from his sabbatical at Yale, 1959-1960.

BOX 2

II/2/1                William Scott's letters home from Haverford College. 1934.

II/2/3/1             Swarthmore College yearbook. 1937.

II/2/3/2             Notebook from sabbatical year at Yale. 1959-1960.

II/2/3/3             Scrapbook of William's trip to Europe following college graduation. 1938. Stored

in box 4.

97-27/III/6       Group III, Scott and Herbert Family Papers, Subgroup 6, Henry L. Herbert Papers, Series 1, Correspondence. 1917-1918. 3 folders.

There is very little material in any of the Scott papers regarding Ann's family, the Henry L. Herberts. This series contains letters written by Ann's father to his mother and sister while he was in the Army during world War I. The letters describe his Army career activities, from enlistment to discharge, one year later. Letters he wrote to his sister are somewhat more frank than those to his mother, as he tried to avoid alarming his mother unnecessarily. Arranged chronologically.

BOX 2

III/6/1/1             Correspondence. Dec. 2, 1917 - Feb. 1, 1918.

III/6/1/2             Correspondence. Feb. 1 - May 18, 1918.
