CITIZEN ALERT
Citizen Alert is a Nevada non-profit, multi-issue organization dedicated to public participation and government accountability in issues of concern to Nevadans. Citizen Alert was founded in 1975. Since then it has worked for public education and action on primary energy resource development, nuclear waste, the Valmy power plant, military air and land withdrawals from the state and Native American nations, the effects of nuclear testing on the state's health and on world peace, and the fragility and interdependence of Nevada's land and water resources.
In the early 1980s this organization formed a successful grassroots campaign to stop the United States government from establishing the MX missile system in Nevada. The proposed MX missile program would have based a military defense program on railroad cars and highways which would have keep armament moving constantly throughout Nevada and western Utah, thus providing a target less susceptible to attack from foreign countries. This collection contains news clippings, newsletters, environmental impact statements, correspondence, pamphlets, and flyers about the organizations concerned with and the issues of the MX missile program. The contents date from about 1979-1981 and are unarranged.
