Frontismatter
"In many respects Beltran's life was a microcosm of the Basque experience in the American West. He had worked as a herder, a camptender, and was a "tramp" sheepman without a home base, traveling about the public lands with his bands while challenging the Adams and McGill Company, one of Nevada's most powerful livestock operations. Later he was a homesteader and then managed to put together an impressive sheep and cattle ranch, which today consists of several thousand acres, three sheep bands, and 600 cows. Its activities extend over three Nevada counties." — from the Introduction
