Circulation Code
General Borrowers
This circulation code defines the privileges and responsibilities of undergraduate students and classified staff of the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN); University of Nevada, Reno adjunct or clinical staff; and UCCSN faculty of the community colleges and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Library cards are required for all transactions
Library cards
- Library cards are a University of Nevada, Reno ID card with an affixed library barcode, or a University of Nevada, Reno Library card.
- University of Nevada, Reno students must register at the Main Library or any branch library to qualify for borrowing privileges at the University of Nevada, Reno Libraries.
- Borrowing privileges continue for one year from application if the student continues to be enrolled. To renew borrowing privileges for another year, you must be currently enrolled in classes at the University of Nevada, Reno.
- Truckee Meadows Community College, Western Nevada College, and other University and Community College System of Nevada students must show a TMCC, WNC or other UCCSN identification card or a current semester fee receipt. The student will be issued a University of Nevada, Reno library card. The card is valid for one year from application if the student continues to be enrolled. Students having library cards issued by TMCC and WNC libraries will already be registered in the library's computer and will not have to apply for an additional library card to use the UNR libraries. To renew borrowing privileges for another year, students must show a valid UCCSN college or university identification card.
- It is the responsibility of the student to keep the library informed of a current address. A student who will be absent from this address for more than two weeks must insure that materials due the library are returned.
Borrowing Books
- Present your library card and the books you want to borrow at the circulation desk.
- A student is responsible for all materials checked out on his or her library card until the materials are returned to the Library from which they were borrowed.
Loan Periods
- Books are checked out for 28 days.
- Books are subject to recall (after 14 days) if requested by another patron.
- Books located at a Reserve Desk have been set aside by faculty for class work. They may be checked out for a limited period of time. A library card is required to check out reserve items. Loan periods are 2 hour/library use only, 2 hour/overnight, 12 hours, 3 days, and 7 days and are determined by the instructor.
- Bound journals in Getchell Library may be checked out for three days, with no renewals. Failure to return a journal will result in suspension of borrowing privileges. Journals in the Life and Health Sciences Library and Savitt Medical Library and bound journals in DeLaMare Library may be checked out for three days. Unbound journal issues in DeLaMare Library are noncirculating.
Renewals
- Books may be renewed by accessing your library account on the Web, by telephone, or in person. However, overdue books may not be renewed by telephone if the student's total fines are more than $5.00. Books may not be renewed on the Web if they are overdue. You may renew as many times as necessary as long as no one else requests the book.
Recall of books
- All books are subject to recall if another borrower or the Reserve Desk supervisor requests the book. If a book has been recalled it must be returned no later than the date printed on the recall notice. The date on the recall notice supersedes the original due date. You will be charged $.25 per day for unreturned, recalled items.
- A borrower who may be absent from the area for more than one week must insure that material due the library or recalled by the library during such absences is returned in accordance with library policies.
Holds and searches
- Placing a HOLD on a book reserves that book for the requestor. When the library catalog indicates that a
book is checked out, "request a hold" to prevent the book from being renewed. To request a hold:
- Display the full catalog record for the item (click the underlined title in a browse list to display the full record).
- Click the Request button at the top of the screen.
- If the book you want is missing, you may place a SEARCH on it. You will be notified by mail when the book is returned or located. If the book is not found after ten days of searching, you will be notified and an Interlibrary Loan can be initiated. In accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes, information regarding the current borrower of a book will not be disclosed.
Overdue fines and lost books
- There are no overdue fines. One overdue notice will be sent by email. The next notice mailed will be a bill for the cost of replacing the book plus a $10.00 processing fee and a $5.00 billing fee. Failure to receive a notice, for whatever reason, does not remove the responsibility for charges.
- Overdue fines for reserve items are $1.00 per hour per item for hourly reserves and $5.00 per day per item for daily reserves. The maximum fine is $20.00 per item. No overdue notice will be mailed. However, a bill will be mailed either for the maximum fine or for the cost of replacing the reserve item plus a $10.00 processing fee and a $20.00 billing fee.
- Your borrowing privileges are suspended when you have accrued charges of $5.00 or more.
- A "stop" is placed on student records with the Controller's Office when charges exceeding $10.00 are accrued in the library. A "stop" means that transcripts and registration are withheld until library charges are paid.
- Bills for overdue fines may be paid at the circulation desk of any UNR library. Bills that have resulted in a "stop" being placed can be paid at either the Cashier's Office or the Circulation desk of the Main Library.
