Off-campus Access to Licensed Resources
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why do I need to follow these instructions?
- The University of Nevada, Reno Libraries subscribe to licensed article indexes, databases, and electronic journals that limit off-campus access to "authenticated" UNR users. The Libraries' proxy server "authenticates" you as a valid UNR user by prompting for your NetID username and password.
- Do I have to change my browser settings?
- No, just click and go!
- Will my old bookmarks work?
- No! Our hyperlinks to licensed resources have been modified so that our
proxy server will prompt you for your NetID username and password if you are
off-campus. If you are no longer using the "browser proxy" method,
but have an
old bookmark to a favorite resource, you can either delete the bookmark and
reset it, or modify it so that it will work.
How to modify an old bookmark to work with the NetID authentication method:
Old bookmark: http://www.acm.org/dl/
Modified bookmark: http://0-www.acm.org.innopac.library.unr.edu/dl/
Add: 0- ("zero hyphen") after http://
Add: .innopac.library.unr.edu after .org (or .com or .gov or .mil), before the first forward slash - How can I make an external link authenticate me as a UNR user?
- You can modify an external link (i.e. a link NOT on the Library web) to a UNR licensed resource so that it will
work. Edit the link directly in your browser's address bar, or edit in Notepad
and paste it into the address bar:
External link: http://search.ebscohost.com/direct.asp?db=aph&jid=C0X&scope=site (CyberPsychology and Behavior)
Modified link: http://0-search.ebscohost.com.innopac.libary.unr.edu/direct.asp?db=aph&jid=C0X&scope=site
Add 0- ("zero hyphen") after http://
Add: .innopac.library.unr.edu after .org (or .com or .gov or .mil), before the first forward slash - Does this work with my Internet Service Provider and PC or Mac?
- It should, since you no longer have to change your browser settings for off-campus access.
- How often will I be prompted for my NetID username and password?
- Once per browser session. As long as you don't close your browser, you can visit as many resources as you like without having to re-enter your NetID username and password.
- What if I type my NetID username and password and get an error message?
- Here's a list of error messages and what they mean. Occasionally NOTHING happens when you type your username and password, and there's no error message. If this happens, try re-entering your login information. If that fails, call the Circulation Desk at (775) 682-5625, so they can see if there's a problem with your account.
- What are "Course Reserves"?
- Please see Course Reserve Guidelines for Students for an explanation.
- How do I find my "Electronic Course Reserves"?
- On the Library Home page, click the link to Course RESERVES. Then search By Instructor or By Course.
- Do I have to authenticate to access WebCT readings?
- Your WebCT course may include links to the Libraries' licensed databases or journal articles. Be prepared to enter your NetID username and password when you click one of these links. PDF (Adobe Acrobat) files or scanned course materials located on the WebCT server do NOT require authentication, since your WebCT login automatically restricts access to enrolled students.
